THE SWISS HOTEL SCHOOL COMMUNITY KITCHEN
As you know with the country in the state of lockdown our ability to continue with industry-based internships has been impacted heavily.
We foresee difficulties continuing for a month or two yet with some internships not resuming until October. While this is beyond our control we will be looking to partner with those businesses which are better placed to recover more quickly. For the time being, we will, therefore, be focussed on moving forward with the theoretical components of the programmes online and hopefully in the classroom in the next few weeks.
As an initiative going forward though, attempting to allow students to make up the notional hours of “industry work”, the Swiss Hotel School has partnered with the “Chefs with Compassion” community kitchen initiative which is trying to get as many chefs either in their homes or their workplace kitchens to prepare meals for the unfortunate communities struggling with food.
As such, we have opened up our large-scale food preparation kitchen to assist in the cooking of bulk meals, which are then distributed to various communities where hunger is most prevalent.
We would like to involve the students in the preparation of these meals, although it will not be seen as a compulsory part of the teaching and learning program but rather volunteering service to the community kitchen. Students will be rostered on particular shifts – possibly once per week or one week per month – all well within regular business hours, to ensure that we follow the proper guidelines and regulations regarding limited numbers of “staff” for social distancing reasons etc.
If you as parent/sponsor are willing to allow the SHS student to participate, please could the student inform Chef Chad via WhatsApp on the various existing groups.
The Swiss Hotel School holds a CIPC permit which allows us to operate as community kitchen which will be distributed to the students backed up with a letter from SHS informing whomever it may concern that they would be working at the SHS producing meals for the less fortunate.
This will not impact our ability to return to school at the first opportunity.
Stay safe and thank you again for your continued support.
